Worth it Rainbow Kitten Surprise with Spacey Jane, The Great Saltair
The North Carolina band brings their bones tour to The Great Saltair tonight, that big outdoor stage right on the shore of the Great Salt Lake out past Magna. Spacey Jane opens. This is one of those shows where the light does half the work: the sun drops behind the Oquirrhs, the water goes pink, and a room full of people sings back every word.
Our take
A lake breeze, a big singalong crowd, and one of the prettiest natural backdrops any Utah venue has. Get there before sunset and let the light do its thing.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: The same tour also has a listing at Sandy Amphitheater for this date, so double-check your ticket for the correct venue before you drive out to Magna. Confirm doors and set times on the ticket page.

Main Street fire block gets a rebuild plan
Salt Lake City approved a $2 million loan to help rebuild the downtown buildings damaged in the Main Street fire. The money goes to a property owner working to reconstruct the storefronts that burned. It is a real step toward filling the hole that fire left on one of downtown's busiest walking blocks.
Two SLC transportation programs did not survive budget cuts
Salt Lake City trimmed two transportation programs in this year's budget, including the Hive Pass transit discount and a green parking effort. If you counted on the discounted transit pass, that is the one to watch. City staff have shared updates on what happens next for riders.

This Week
Worth it Draper Days 2026, Draper City Park
Draper's big summer celebration is running at Draper City Park with carnival rides, food, music, and family events across several days. It is the kind of hometown festival where you run into half the neighborhood.
Our take
A classic south-valley summer night. Bring cash for the food booths and let the kids run the carnival.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: The schedule changes day to day. Check the event page for which activities are on which night before you go.

Worth it Real Salt Lake vs Burnley FC, America First Field
RSL hosts England's Burnley FC in a friendly at America First Field in Sandy. A chance to see a Premier League side up close in the summer, with the mountains right behind the stands.
Our take
International club soccer without leaving the valley. A fun midweek night out even if you are a casual fan.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: Kickoff time and any lineup notes can shift. Confirm on the ticket page before you head down.

Worth it Drop-in Drawing Disco: Oil Pastel Still Lifes, UMFA
The Utah Museum of Fine Arts on the University of Utah campus hosts a drop-in drawing session working with oil pastels and still-life setups. No skill needed, just show up and make something.
Our take
A low-key, creative afternoon indoors when the heat is doing its thing outside.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: Times and any museum admission details can change. Confirm on the UMFA event page before you go.

Worth it Food Trucks and Open Mic Night, The Gallivan Center
The Gallivan Center downtown lines up food trucks alongside an open mic night. Grab dinner from a truck, find a spot, and listen to whoever steps up to the mic.

An easy, cheap downtown night. Come hungry and stay for whoever is brave enough to grab the mic.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: The truck lineup and start time can shift. Check the Gallivan Center events page before heading over.

Worth it Our Town, Hale Centre Theatre Sandy
Thornton Wilder's classic Our Town runs on the Beehive Stage at Hale Centre Theatre in Sandy. It is a quiet, heartfelt play about small-town life that lands whether you have seen it before or not.

๐ด Eat & Drink
Worth it Batista, South Salt Lake
This South Salt Lake spot has been cooking up Cuban food for five years now, and it has earned a loyal crowd. Think slow-cooked meats, bright citrus, and that home-kitchen feel you do not get everywhere. Order the ropa vieja, the shredded beef stewed in tomato and peppers that Cuban kitchens are known for, and pair it with sweet plantains.
Our take
Real Cuban comfort food in a part of the valley people sleep on. Five years in and still worth the trip.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: Hours and the day's menu can change. Confirm they are open and check the address before you drive over.

Worth it Brighton Lakes: Mary, Martha, Catherine, Big Cottonwood Canyon
A moderate 4.6-mile out-and-back that starts at the Brighton lodge and strings together a set of alpine lakes. You climb past Lake Mary, Lake Martha, and up to Lake Catherine, with big granite peaks all around. This is prime alpine country and the wildflowers should be showing this time of year.
Our take
The easiest way to feel like you drove deep into the mountains without the long haul. A string of lakes in under 5 miles is hard to beat.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: This is protected watershed, so no dogs and no swimming, and the trail is not accessible in winter. Watch the sky for afternoon monsoon storms and turn back if thunder builds.

A big splash pad with 17 water spray features, an old-fashioned water tower, a wading creek, small waterfalls, and a shaded corner for the little ones. It is a soak-and-run kind of place the kids will not want to leave.
Our take
One of the better splash pads in the south valley, and free. Pack a lunch and make a morning of it.
โ ๏ธ Heads up: Splash pad hours run seasonally and can close for maintenance. Confirm it is running before you load up the car.

Busy wildfire season stretches crews across the West
Utah's fire season is running hard this summer, and crews are spread thin as fires pop up across the state and the wider West. The Buck Basin Fire alone grew to around 230 acres and pulled in nearly 150 personnel. It is a good reminder to check conditions before you head into the mountains.
Monsoon storms raise flash flood risk on burn scars
Summer monsoon storms are rolling through, and that means flash flood danger near Utah's recent burn scars. Ground that lost its plants to fire cannot soak up a fast, heavy rain, so water runs off quick. If you are hiking slot canyons or narrow washes this week, watch the sky and the forecast.
West Valley City house fire causes about $200K in damage
A house fire in West Valley City left an estimated $200,000 in damage. The good news buried in it: crews rescued a cat from the home. No word of injuries. Fires like this are a nudge to check your own smoke alarms while the season is dry.
Cherry Peak Ski Resort in Cache County is up for sale
The family-run Cherry Peak Ski Resort north of the valley in Cache County has been listed for sale. It is a smaller, low-key hill that has drawn Utah families looking for a mellow day on the snow. A sale could mean new ownership or new plans by the time winter rolls back around.
