Red Butte Garden, University of Utah

Utah's largest botanical garden in the foothills above the U, with rolling themed gardens, easy paths, and big valley views. A calm couple of hours any season, and a marquee outdoor concert series in summer.

This Is the Place Heritage Park

A living-history pioneer village at the mouth of Emigration Canyon where kids pan for gold, ride a train and pony, and wander old homes staffed by costumed guides. More to do than you expect.

The City Library, downtown

Not just books: the downtown Main Library is an architectural landmark with a walkable curved glass wall, a rooftop you can climb to, and valley views from the top. Free, and a genuinely cool hour even for adults.

Temple Square gardens, downtown

However you feel about the history, the manicured grounds are some of the best-kept gardens in the city and free to wander, with seasonal flowers and, in winter, the famous light displays.
