Western Governors University, the online school born in Utah, is putting its new headquarters on a full downtown block. The state's biggest homegrown university has pieced together about 9.6 acres near 500 South and 200 West, and the first thing to go is the Sheraton at 150 West 500 South, the hotel that closed this spring after the land sold out from under it. Crews are set to start tearing the Sheraton down in October, clearing the way for a campus WGU says will eventually run close to a million square feet with room for up to 5,000 employees. The full build stretches over roughly four years, so this corner of downtown becomes a construction zone before it becomes anything else. For a school that made its name teaching entirely online, planting a physical flagship a few blocks off Main Street is a statement. It also lands as downtown keeps swapping tired mid-block parcels for towers, and it puts thousands of daytime workers within a short walk of the Green Line and the Salt Palace.

Utah leaders are trying to buy up and protect more of the marshland on the south and southeast edge of the Great Salt Lake before it gets developed. At a news conference on a duck-club property near the lake on July 16, the Utah Inland Port Authority put another $2.5 million toward the effort, adding to a growing fund aimed at keeping the wetlands where the lake begins in public hands.
