The Days of '47 Parade rolls east to Liberty Park with a record 147 entries, a pair of Black Hawks overhead, and George Washington riding along for the country's 250th. Downtown is closed off all morning, so it's a walk-or-TRAX kind of day.
The rest of the long weekend is a hot one. Highs sit near 101 through Sunday with an extreme heat watch that starts Saturday, so push the outdoor plans to early or late. For the first time in years, Salt Lake renters have the upper hand
After a decade of leases that only ever got more expensive, the valley's rental market has quietly flipped. The median asking rent sat at about $1,257 in July, down 2.6 percent from a year ago. That is a small number until you remember rents jumped more than 20 percent in a single year back in 2021.
The reason is simple: a wall of new apartments finished at once, and now landlords are competing for tenants instead of the other way around. That means move-in specials, a free month here and there, and room to actually negotiate. One renter told a local reporter he found a bigger place for less than he paid three summers ago, without the usual bidding-war scramble.
Property managers are careful to call it balanced, not a giveaway, and $1,257 is still real money. But the softening has held past the usual spring rush, which points to something steadier than a seasonal dip, even as the county keeps adding people and for-sale homes stay out of reach.

If your lease is up this summer, this is the year to shop around instead of auto-renewing. The building down the street may be dangling a free month, and for once the person signing the lease gets to ask for something.⚠️ Heads up: Softer does not mean cheap, and the deals cluster in the big new complexes with units to fill, not in every older fourplex. A $31 million rail project aims to quiet the west side's train traffic
Crews broke ground on July 17 on a new rail interchange just south of I-80 near the airport, a project meant to pull train-building and switching out of the old East Yard in Poplar Grove. The payoff for west-side neighbors is fewer trains rumbling through and shorter waits at the crossings that cut the area in half. The Utah Department of Transportation and Patriot Rail are behind it, with the work due to wrap by the end of 2027.
Triple digits and a heat watch land right on the long weekend
The holiday stretch is going to bake. Highs sit near 101 Friday through Sunday, and the National Weather Service has an extreme heat watch running from Saturday afternoon into next week. A little monsoon moisture gives Saturday a slight shot at afternoon storms, which is welcome shade until it turns into flash-flood risk in the canyons. Save the hikes and the yard work for the cool ends of the day.

Days of '47 Parade, downtown Salt Lake City
The parade is the loud heart of Pioneer Day, and this year it doubles as a birthday party for the country. A record 147 entries line up at South Temple and State this morning, roll east to 200 East, then south and over to Liberty Park at 600 East. Watch for a flyover of Apache and Black Hawk helicopters and, in a nod to the nation's 250th, a George Washington riding the route.

Evanescence with Spiritbox and Nova Twins, Utah First Credit Union Amphitheatre, West Valley City
Amy Lee and Evanescence bring the goth-rock catalog to West Valley on Saturday night, and the undercard is the real reason to show up early. Spiritbox has become one of the biggest names in heavy music, and London's Nova Twins open the whole thing loud. It is a three-band bill that earns the drive out past the freeway.

Three genuinely big rock acts on one lawn under a summer sky. Come for Amy Lee's voice on 'My Immortal,' stay honest and admit Spiritbox might be the set you remember.⚠️ Heads up: It is an open amphitheater and the day tops out near 100, so the lawn holds the heat well past sundown. Bring water and do not count on the shade lasting through the openers.

Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival, Trolley Square and the Gateway
The valley's scrappiest theater festival is back for its run through August 2, with more than 20 companies staging short, original, uncensored shows nobody vetted for you. Everything happens in two hubs: the Alliance Theatre at Trolley Square and MadKing's up at the Gateway, so you can hop between a one-woman drama and a magic act in the same afternoon.

Where else do you gamble ten bucks on a play with a title you cannot pronounce and stumble into the best hour of your week? The Fringe is uneven on purpose, and that is the fun of it.⚠️ Heads up: Uncensored means uncensored, and the shows are unadjudicated, so quality swings wildly from room to room. Millcreek throws its holiday party at the Common tonight, and it leans all the way into the Utah tradition: pie and root beer floats, line dancing, live music, and the roller-skating loop that has become the city's summer hangout. It is the low-key, kid-in-tow counter to the downtown crush, right in the middle of the new Millcreek core.

This is the Pioneer Day plan for anyone who wants the holiday without the elbows.⚠️ Heads up: It runs in the heat of the evening with limited shade around the plaza, so the pavement stays warm. Salt Lake Bees vs Omaha, with Pioneer Day fireworks, Daybreak
The Bees close out a long homestand against the Omaha Storm Chasers this weekend, and Friday's game ends with the real thing: a full fireworks show over the outfield in Daybreak. With the city downtown trading its Liberty Park fireworks for a drone show this year, the ballpark is one of the few places in the valley still lighting the actual sky.

Cheap seats, a Triple-A game, and real fireworks to cap Pioneer Day. The Royals fly cross-country after a home shutout
Utah's NWSL side is holding a top-half spot, and after grinding out a 1-0 home win over Orlando it now takes on its longest trip of the summer. The Royals head to North Carolina on Saturday to face a Courage team scrapping for a playoff place.

This little Afghani grill on Redwood Road does saffron rice and charcoal kebabs, but the thing to order is the chicken wrap. It comes folded in paratha, a flaky, layered flatbread they griddle to order, loaded with grilled chicken and a couple of homemade sauces that do the heavy lifting. It is fast, cheap, and the kind of spot the west side keeps to itself.

Pioneer Day Drone Show over Liberty Park
The city swapped its old Liberty Park fireworks for a large-scale drone show this year, a fire-season call that trades booms for a quiet, choreographed grid of lights over the park. It is free, it is late, and with the fire danger this dry, it is the closest thing downtown has to a fireworks finale.
Our take
Quieter than the old fireworks and easier on the dogs and the little ones, and on a night this dry, a lot smarter. Bring a blanket and look up around ten.⚠️ Heads up: A 10 p.m. start is past bedtime for the smallest kids, and the park empties slow afterward, so park somewhere you can walk out of rather than idle in the lot.

The Point starts rising on the old prison land in Draper
The 600-acre redevelopment of the former state prison site in Draper is finally moving from dirt to buildings. Vertical construction on the first phase, a $2.3 billion downtown district, started in late June. This month the state land authority put out a call for developers to build its River District, roughly 50 acres and 800 to 900 for-sale homes, one of the biggest single housing pushes in the south valley.
The Great Salt Lake sits a few feet above its record low
The lake hit its high mark for the year back in spring and is set to slide again as summer evaporation outpaces what flows in. As of July 22 it sat near 4,191 feet, about 7 feet below a healthy level and only around 3 feet above the record low set in late 2022. It is the number the whole valley watches, because a lower lake means more exposed, dust-prone bed to the west.
A 2024 city program has cleared more than 1,300 homes
A Salt Lake City program that lets rowhouses, duplexes, and small multi-family projects go up in more neighborhoods, in exchange for a share of below-market units, turned in its first full progress report in mid-July. Since it took effect in spring 2024 it has green-lit 1,338 homes, 973 of them income-restricted, across 19 active projects. Two are already built.
