Hand-picked Salt Lake County happenings, straight to your inbox. No fluff, no spam, easy to leave.
Your Google Business Profile is the box with your name, hours, phone number, photos and reviews that shows up when someone in Murray or Draper searches for you. This guide covers the profile itself: claiming and verifying it, which address Google lets you use, each field, and what to do after a suspension. It is built on Google's own help pages, checked October 31, 2026.
To set up a Google Business Profile in Salt Lake City, go to business.google.com/add, enter your real business name and one primary category, and either show an address with your sign on it or, if you drive to customers, hide the address and list up to 20 Salt Lake County cities you serve. Then verify by phone, email, video or postcard, add real photos, and ask customers for reviews without offering anything in return. A co-working desk only qualifies if it has your sign and your staff during business hours.
Your business may already have a profile you never set up, or one a past web designer made under their own login. Before you create anything, go to business.google.com/add, type your name and address, and see what comes up. Google allows one profile per business, so a second one breaks its rules.
If Google says someone else may manage the profile, choose Request Access. Google emails the current owner, who has three days to respond. If they ignore it, Google says you may be able to claim the profile from the confirmation email by choosing View request, then Verify. A service-area business with no shop has to contact Google support instead.
Keep the owner role on a Google account the business controls, not an employee's Gmail or an agency's login, and add helpers as managers. When a Cottonwood Heights roofer drops its agency, that setting decides whether the roofer keeps its reviews.
Google's guidelines sort businesses into three kinds. If customers come to you, like a salon in Sugar House or a tire shop on Redwood Road, show the address. Google expects permanent signage with your business name at that address.
If you go to customers, like a house cleaner working from a spare bedroom in Taylorsville, you are a service-area business and Google says to hide the address. Its own example is a plumber running the business from home. If you do both, like a Midvale appliance shop that takes walk-ins and sends techs to houses, you can show the address and list service areas too.
Rented and shared addresses have their own rules:
Google offers each business its own set of methods: phone or text, email, a live video call during business hours, a recorded video, or a postcard. Google says its review takes up to five business days after you finish. Postcard codes usually arrive within 14 days and expire after 30.
A recorded video has to be one unedited take with no breaks, at least 30 seconds, filmed live and uploaded from a phone. A storefront films street signs or the building number, the business name on a permanent sign, then something only staff can reach, like opening the register. A service-area business films landmarks at its address, its tools and equipment, and either the owner doing the work or an invoice, permit or utility bill with the profile's name on it. For a West Valley City landscaper that could be the corner street sign, the trailer in the driveway, the mowers inside it, and an invoice. Google says not to film empty land.
Use the name on your sign, your invoices and your Utah Division of Corporations record. Google does not allow extra words in the name, so a garage door company that adds "Sandy Draper 24/7 Repair" after its registered name is risking a suspension.
Pick one primary category, the most specific one for the core business. Google says to use as few categories as possible and to choose ones that finish the sentence "This business IS a," not "HAS a." Its example is a grocery store with a bakery and deli: grocery store is primary, bakery and deli are extras. Google warns that editing a category may send you back through verification, so decide before you change them.
Use a local number that rings at the business and that you control. Post the hours customers can reach you and set holiday hours before Thanksgiving and Pioneer Day. Google says appointment-only businesses should not list hours.
A service-area business can list up to 20 areas by city or ZIP code, not as a radius, and Google says the whole area should be within about two hours of driving from your base. A West Jordan landscaper who mows in West Jordan, South Jordan, Riverton, Herriman, Kearns and Taylorsville lists those six. A Sandy pest control company that takes jobs in Lehi can add it, since Utah County is well inside two hours.
Listing a city does not put you on the map there, because Google still weighs how far you are from the person searching. That ranking side, plus city pages and Salt Lake directory listings, is in our guide to local SEO in Salt Lake City.
Google takes JPG or PNG photos from 10 KB to 5 MB, at least 250 by 250 pixels, with 720 by 720 recommended, and videos up to 30 seconds and 75 MB at 720p or better. It says photos should "represent reality," so skip heavy filters. Add a logo, a cover photo, then the real business: the building from the parking lot so people can find your door on State Street, the truck with your name on it, the crew on a job in Draper, the finished kitchen.
Posts come in three kinds. An update is a note with a photo and an optional website button. An offer needs a title and start and end dates and times. An event needs a title and dates. Post when something changes, like closing for Pioneer Day or a furnace tune-up price that runs through November. Google says a post with a phone number in it may be rejected if it cannot tie the number to you, and posts older than six months are archived unless you set a date range.
Send your review link or QR code from the profile the day you finish a job. Google's policy forbids a discount, free service or giveaway entry for a review, asking only the customers you know are happy, pressing people to review while they are at your counter, and review quotas for staff. Reply briefly, by name, and without coupons.
The Questions and Answers section is gone. Local search researchers at Whitespark reported that Google removed it in late 2025 and replaced it with an Ask button in the Google Maps app that writes AI answers owners cannot edit. Whitespark found the answers draw on your profile details, photos, reviews and website, including FAQ pages. So put answers to your common questions, like whether you go up to Park City, on your website and in your profile fields.
Google says it may suspend profiles that break its guidelines. The causes it warns about are the ones above: a mail-drop address, a co-working desk with no sign or staff, city names added to the business name, or a second profile.
Fix the cause first, then file an appeal through Google's appeals tool while signed in to the owner account. Google's help page says you can appeal only once, so attach evidence the first time: business registration, a business license, tax certificates or utility bills, with a name and address that match the profile. For a Salt Lake business that usually means your Utah Division of Corporations record, your city license and a utility bill. Our Salt Lake City business license guide covers the license, including the one a home business can request when the city does not require it.
Google says not to create a new profile while you wait. A new one starts with none of the old profile's reviews.
All of it is free. Work in this order.
